Llanrwst Utd progressed to the next round of the Mawddach Challenge Cup with an emphatic 1-6 victory over Blaenau Amateurs on Saturday. The fixture was played at Maes Tegid, the home of Welsh Premier League club, Bala Town.
Both clubs had agreed to hire the 3G at Bala due to the fixture being postponed for the past four weeks due to Cae Clyd, (Home of Blaenau Amateurs) & Gwydir Park (Home of Llanrwst Utd) being waterlogged.
The Rwsters gave a debut to recent signing Scott Hall from Penmaenmawr Phoenix, as well as welcoming back the influential Chris Beardmore to the team after him becoming a father back in December.
Club Captain Leighton Griffiths, Richard Orme, Aron Hughes and Luke Roberts missed the game.
On 5 minutes, a lovely through ball by Elliot Llewelyn for Mez Knight nearly seen the Rwsters take the lead. Knight was unselfish as he squared the ball to top goal scorer Mike Lundstram but he slipped at the crucial second.
It was the same combination of Llewelyn and Knight that gave Llanrwst the lead. Again it was a through ball by Llewelyn, after he intercepted a poor pass out the back from Blaenau right back Emlyn Jennings found Mez Knight and he slotted it under the outrushing Gethin Jones in the Blaenau goal.
Captain Gwyn Jones seen his acrobatic volley well saved on twenty four minutes. Lundstram had another fine opportunity on 29 minutes but his header went just over the bar from six yards out.
A minute later, Morgan Owen sent Llewelyn through on goal but it was that Man again, Gethin Jones that kept Blaenau in the game.
A good move from Blaenau centre Midfielders, iwan Griffiths and former Llanrwst Player Iwan Jones nearly seen Blaenau equalise but Scott Hall made a fabulous tackle on Kieron Ellis.
With a minute left in the half, Blaenau Left Back, Sion Jones put a through ball, Matt Mullender was favourite to intercept it but he slipped after good pressure from Rhodri Pugh but Pugh couldn’t hit the target.
A frustrated Llanrwst Utd would be going in 0-1 at the break.
Llanrwst looked far better in the opening minutes of the second half, Mez Knight doubling his and the Rwsters lead after Owen and Hall combing well down the right side of the pitch.
The 3rd and 4th came in the next seven minutes, Lundstrum scoring his 14th and 15th of the season. The 4th was a rebound from a penalty that was initially well saved again by Jones in goal.
Sam Roberts scored his first goal for his home town club with a sweetly struck shot with his left foot from just inside the area.
Callum Parry was also on the scoresheet, as he beat his defender before smashing it into the top corner.
Blaenau Amateurs consolation goal came from Kieron Ellis.
Llanrwst Utd man of the match was Mez Knight.
Winning Manager Barry Owen commented: Overall I’m pleased with the result but we weren’t good enough first half and the lads were frustrated at half time. Maybe that’s down to rustiness from not playing. Second half we were by far the better team, we moved the ball well and looked dangerous. It’s always nice to score plenty of goals but it could have been more if it wasn’t for the Blaenau Keeper. I thought he was outstanding and made some top saves.
