Meet the Player: Paul Cassidy

June 13, 2017

Talented player and highly rated wherever he has played

BYDAVE JONES

What clubs have you played for?

Penmaenmawr Phoenix, Conwy United, Llandudno Junction , Llanrwst United and Glan Conwy only a few games :-)

Your most memorable match?

Beating Holyhead 5-2 at home for Conwy when we were battling for the league. I scored two on a cold winter's night and we played them off the park. There was still a long way to go that season but we knew that night we would win the league. We were better than them in every battle that night.

Biggest highlight of your football career?

Winning a few league cups and voted the best player in the league twice were both enjoyable but winning the Welsh Alliance League with my local team Conwy in 2010/11 was the highlight. A great set of lads and a great team.

Hardest opponent ever?

Surprisingly a player who I found was better outside of his normal position. I never liked playing against centre halves with pace as that was usually my strength but every time I played against Mike Lundstram at centre half I rarely came away with anything out of a game and I always came off feeling I'd been contained. Mike is great in the air and lightning quick so it would have to be Mike although most know him as a striker.

Most talented team-mate ever?

Jake Cassidy , Toby Jones and Darren Jones were all great players to play with. The player who was missed more than any other in any team that I played for if they were missing is Leighton Griffiths. So good on the ball and a leader for Llanrwst and other teams he has played with over the years. Just lacks a bit of pace now but still going strong-ish :-)

Describe your finest goal

In that game at home against Holyhead it was 1-1 and anyone who knows me know I miss a lot of chances. I remember Paul Moroney telling me before the game to just hit anything without worrying that I'll miss. It was 1-1, 35 yards out and I hit one off the top corner post and in that takes us 2-1 up. A great crowd at Conwy that night saw the one ball I ever hit cleanly!

Most goals scored in a single match

5 away at Amlwch on the last day of the season in circa 2007.

Most embarrassing moment as a footballer

Losing 3-2 in normal time in the FAW Trophy Final in 2011 for Conwy against Holywell despite being 2-0 up after 90 minutes. We conceded 3 goals in three minutes!

What is your biggest strength as a player - and your biggest weakness?

Strength - pace and running with the ball, weakness - touch and finishing

Have you played representative football? If so, who for?

North Wales up to under 15

RANDOM QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

Who is Wales' finest all-time player in your book?

Giggs

Will Euro 2016 be Wales' finest hour in our lifetimes or is there better to come?

Would love to see it again but I think we have seen the best summer that we are ever likely to see in a generation. I hope I am wrong!

Worst pitch you have ever played on?

I don't like small pitches so sorry, Glan Conwy is the pitch I dislike the most

Do you have a jinx team you never seem to beat?

Glantraeth, year in year out. I never seemed to do well against Holywell either!

If the best players in the Conwy Valley combined into one team, how far up the pyramid do you think they could go?

Cymru Alliance

Have Arsenal made a mistake sticking with Arsene Wenger?

No. They should be thankful they have him although it does baffle me as to why he hasn't spent big on a midfield enforcer and striker.

One thing you'd like to achieve before retiring as a player?

I'm retired!!
