Llandudno Albion v Llanrwst Utd
Mawddach Cup Round 2
Previous Winners Llanrwst Utd travelled a short distance to Llandudno Albion on Saturday, hoping to progress to the 3rd round but had a difficult task ahead. Albion had only lost once at home this year, a 1-0 defeat to Amlwch and the Rwsters coming off 4 consecutive defeats.
Debutant Steffan Whiteley, a recent signing from neighbors Llandudno Junction took his place at the centre of defence and it was that man that put the Rwsters 1-0 up. Good work by Matt Mullender down the left hand side, forcing a corner and the returning Gwyn Jones delivered a cracking ball, Whiteley meeting it with a powerful header.
Despite conceding an early goal, Albion forced 3 consecutive corners of their own but couldn't convert any. However Albions equaliser wasn't far away, a Jordan Kane through ball found Duncan Midgeley out on the left, who powered his way in to the box before being brought down. The referee had no choice but to award a penalty. Captain Joel Lloyd stepped up, and he calmly slotted it past Rwsters keeper, Christian Wright.
On the stroke of half time, Midgeley found himself one on one with Wright, but after rounding the keeper he could only find the side netting. 1-1 HT.
Llanrwst Utd were looking a stronger outfit in the second half, Jordan Bellham and Jac Parry coming close with efforts but Albion had chances of their own. Midgeley heading over from 6 yards and Allan Davies effort whistled passed the post.
Youngster Aron Hughes sealed the game on 89 minutes, Alun Roberts found Mullender who's through ball was met by Hughes who chipped the on rushing keeper.
Manager Barry Owen said: To be fair, the game could have gone either way. It wasn't a great performance but we are through to the next round.
The Rwsters are home to Pwllheli on Saturday, 2pm KO at Gwydir Park.
Both teams met on the first game of the season, playing out a 0-0 draw.
